Crossing the finish line at IRONMAN Arizona 2014 was one of the best moments of my life, and it changed me forever; I will always be an Ironman! Smile Train changes lives forever too, by giving children in need the ability to eat, drink, speak and smile normally. When I started training for triathlon, I quickly realized how self-indulgent and, at times, self-absorbed training can be. This is why I decided to race for Smile Train Team EMPOWER and do something for others in addition to doing something for me.
I am an Internal Medicine Physician in San Diego, California. I was a cyclist for several years and then about four years ago my cycling club integrated running as part of its cross training program. Never having run before, it was a painful challenge but I soon realized I enjoyed it. I had never learned to swim as a child so at age 52 I took my first swim lesson. Two months after my first swim lesson I did my first Triathlon - the ITU World Triathlon, Olympic Distance, in San Diego. I was bitten by the Tri bug and a new passion was born. I’m now a 3x IRONMAN triathlete and a multi-marathon finisher. One of the highlights of my triathlon career was racing the 2016 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii with Team EMPOWER!
I love everything triathlon: the training, the races, the equipment, the camaraderie and the friendships. I love learning from those who are more experienced and love mentoring those who are less experienced than I. Being a member of Smile Train Team EMPOWER provides me with fantastic opportunities to interface with fellow athletes on many levels in addition to giving me the satisfaction of knowing that every time I swim, bike and run on this organization’s behalf, I am helping to improve the lives of so many children around the world.
