Celebrating 450,000 Smiles in India

27 April 2016 | Smile Train

This special year marks 15 years of Smile Train’s presence in India. In that time, our local partners have provided more than 450,000 free cleft surgeries to children who would have been condemned to live in isolation.

Children who received their new smiles almost 15 years ago are now young adults, leading full lives. Former patient Dinesh is a now a budding engineer, Divya is an acclaimed dancer, and Noori is a young mother. On behalf of each of the 450,000 children and their families, thank you for opening your heart to children in need. This is the everlasting power of your support.

Your generous donations not only enable us to provide life transforming surgeries, but also help us train surgeons, anaesthetists, and nurses to provide safe, high-quality cleft care to children in even the most remote parts of India.

This year, we hosted the 6th edition of our STARS conference where 183 doctors learnt new surgery and safety procedures, and, in turn, will train many more doctors, perpetuating our ‘teach a man to fish’ philosophy.

The joy of witnessing a child’s first smile never gets old, and it’s reassuring to know that we have your support as we strive to reach the millions of Indian children who still live with untreated clefts.  A heartfelt thank you and I look forward to another year of smiles in India!
