Decades of Smiles: Dr Navarro’s Story

19 August 2015 | Smile Train

Smile Train partner surgeon, Dr Carlos Navarro, has been helping children with clefts in Peru for over three decades. He and his wife have made giving new smiles their life’s work.

To help the poor rural communities surrounding his hometown of Lima, Dr Navarro and his team have weeklong cleft outreach clinics to bring medical care to even the most isolated areas.

The pace of these clinics is fast. Dr Navarro evaluates dozens of cleft patients to deem them healthy enough for free Smile Train cleft surgery.

The waiting room is full of patient like four-year-old Irvin, who is living with an untreated cleft palate. Like many of Smile Train’s patients, his parents have travelled from a small village for his life-changing surgery.

During these in-country outreach clinics, Smile Train’s local team can perform more than 20 surgeries a day.

Cleft children across Peru have new smiles and brighter futures, thanks to the hard work love and dedication of Dr Navarro and his team.
