Dr Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman

Smile Train staff around the world mourn the loss of our trusted partner Dr Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman after he passed away just days after being diagnosed with COVID-19. He was only 61 years old.

Dr Ashrafuzzaman led a distinguished career in plastic surgery and was one of Bangladesh’s most-skilled burn specialists. He went on to become an Assistant Professor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

In 2014, as he neared retirement, he learned about Smile Train. Instead of hitting the golf course or taking it easy, he decided to spend his days changing the lives of children born with clefts. In just a few years at Ibn Sina Hospital in Sylhet and Kumudini Hospital in Tangail, he was the primary surgeon on 1,000+ cleft surgeries.

His fellow Smile Train partner surgeon, Dr Bijoy Krishna Das, said, “This is a great loss for us – we have lost one of our most respected Smile Train partner Surgeons in Bangladesh. As a person, he was very kind and gentle, committed to the cause of clefts, and was very caring towards his patients. We deeply mourn his passing away. He has gone but will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace.”

Smile Train sends our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. He died as a hero, providing care for those who needed it most in these difficult times.
