Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach talks about what the Power of a Smile means to her.
What first inspired you to support Smile Train?
The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) started working with Smile Train right at the time when I won the title of Miss Universe. After being introduced to Smile Train, and the incredible work that they do, I knew it was an organisation that I wanted to support.
How has your involvement with Smile Train made you look at the Power a Smile differently?
The Power of a Smile is real - I saw it firsthand when I met former Smile Train patients in Manila earlier this year. It’s amazing that a life can change so drastically with a simple 45 minute surgery. Meeting those children made me want to lend my voice and give a helping hand to continue to raise awareness for children born with cleft lip and palate in the developing world, including my home country, the Philippines.
What do you think the Power of a Smile is?
An exchange of a smile can change someone's day. The opportunity to receive a smile is an amazing feeling, but having the ability to share a smile is powerful.
What has the Power of a Smile done for you in your life?
People in the Philippines are so proud to have Miss Universe represent them this year. Seeing their smiles and the joy that I have brought them is a feeling that I cherish and will remember forever.
